NCGOP Legal Update

RNC, NCGOP Seek to Intervene in North Carolina Election Integrity Lawsuit

WASHINGTON -- Following the news that the RNC and NCGOP are seeking legal intervention to defend North Carolina’s election integrity legislation Senate Bill 747 from Democrat attacks, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement.

“Joe Biden should be focused on solving the crises that have erupted under his watch, not directing his political operation to sue state legislators for passing good laws. Senate Bill 747 cracks down on non-citizens voting, protects bipartisan poll watchers, and gets rid of dark money in elections -- polling shows that the American people support these common-sense measures. The RNC and NCGOP are proud to fight for North Carolinians in court with this intervention.”

Background:

  • The RNC and NCGOP are intervening in this lawsuit against the DNC because North Carolina’s Senate Bill 747 is smart legislation made up of common-sense election safeguards that a majority of Americans support.
  • Among other best-practice measures, this legislation:
    • Ensures that mail ballots must be returned by Election Day in order to be counted. 89% of voters believe every ballot should be received by Election Day.
    • Allows access for bipartisan poll watchers to ensure transparency at the ballot box. 78%  of voters are in favor of bipartisan poll observation.
    • Creates new safeguards to prevent non-citizens from voting. 89%  of voters support keeping non-citizens from voting in American elections.
    • Bans third-party dark money from pouring into local North Carolina elections. 78%  of voters think that foreign money should be kept out of American elections.
    • Strengthens voter ID protections in North Carolina. 88% of voters support requiring an ID to vote.
  • Americans do not support Washington, DC Democrats meddling in local elections to score political points. That’s exactly what Biden and the DNC are doing right now.
    • 68%of voters believe that state legislatures should decide the voting rules and regulations for their state, not bureaucrats in Washington, DC.
  • This is just another example of Biden and his allies attacking states for passing locally popular election integrity legislation. The RNC has a record of joining these fights.
    • Biden’s Department of Justice has filed similar lawsuits in Arizona, Georgia, and Texas. The RNC has also intervened in those cases.
  • The RNC has a robust history of fighting for North Carolina election integrity. We secured a major court victory  to protect the rights of North Carolina poll watchers in October 2022.
  • The RNC’s unprecedented election integrity program is now engaged in 56 election integrity lawsuits in 18 states.
